Choose one of the examples Carter provides. Do you agree with Carter's reasoning?
Reading this essay a very good thing carter does for the readers better understanding is he gives us good examples. Without them i really would have been lost with alot of the examples of honesty and integrity. The Example i chose to talk about is "
. A man who has been married for fifty years confesses to his wife on his deathbed that he was unfaithful thirty-five years earlier. The dishonesty was killing his spirit, he says. Now he has cleared his conscience and is able to die in peace." I thought that this was such a good example to help me understand what the writer was trying to grasp. He made you look out side the box. I hear stories like that all the time and never image myself in that situation, but reading this made me feel for the wife and what i would do if it was me. I never thought about it slowly eating away at the wife till she died i just felt releif for the husband, but doing that is such a selfish act and couardly also.
I agree with Carter completly it is such a strong quote. The husband in the story not only cheeted he lied to his wife for 35 years. And on his death bed knowing their will be not consiquences for his actions just relieife from his guilt. His wife will want to forgive him as well because she wants to die in peace not holding a grudge with her lover. This quote really makes you think about true honesty in life.
Hi Samantha,
ReplyDeleteYour post has me wondering if the husband should have chosen to die with the truth and let his wife continue thinking she and her husband had a good marriage. Part of the trouble with integrity is that it comes down to intention. If the husband wanted to tell his wife the truth to stop forcing her to live a lie, would we consider it integrity? If he wanted to tell her the truth, so she didn't have to mourn, is that integrity?
Also, do the husband's actions reflect Ericsson's point about white lies? Is he acting with arrogance to decide what's best for his wife?
What do you all think?
Take care,
Lauren
hi, I agree with also, carter gives a lot of examples to help me understand the meanings of integrity and its importance. The story about the man who lied to hi wife for a long period of time, not only did the right thing, he also saved himself. He did it with no regrets. It was an interesting story to read about. I like your thoughts on carter's meaning of integrity.

I like Carter examples and supportive reasons for what integrity is to him. Just like a lie sometime telling the truth is just a cop out. For that man on his deathbed he really isn’t thinking of his wife he is just worried about himself, just like he did that many years ago. I like that thought that Carter stated about “discerning what is right and what is wrong”. The fact that you must way your reasons and what you believe in is another reason I agree with Cater. The fact that you don’t just believe in something and follow it because you are told to is such a great way to live. One must be a critical thinker to have integrity.
