College Reading and Writing
Question A:   What’s the significance of Shirley Temple?  What meaning does she hold for Lovey?
In The 3 short stories we read we learn about a young girl named lovey who feels unloved and sad in my own views. Every day she goes home and watches Shirley temple with her perfect little curly hair and red blushed cheeks. Every day she watches Shirley have a perfect ending to every one of her shows and imagines that her life could have a perfect ending as well. So lovey and her best friend jerry imagine if their days have perfect endings as well. The significance of Shirley temple in the stories is that it lets a little girl escaped from reality to feel loved and happy every now and then.
In these stories the meaning that Shirley temple brings to lovey is that everything works out in the end. So don’t let life get you down because when you least expect it, it will lift back up. So when she learns and watches it on TV it gives the young girl hope.

  1. Hi Samantha,

Your last line raises a question: Does Temple give Lovey hope or is she part of the problem? I'm curious to hear what everyone thinks about this.

    Take care,
    Lauren

  2. I believe that she helps lovey. It's exactly what she needs to have hope in her life and move on until someday someone else can give lovey her own perfect ending.

  3. I think Shirley gives her hope but at the same time in a way is also the problem. Lovey is watching her everyday obviously she wants a better life and she wants to be loved and cared for like Shirley is. Maybe prettier and smarter, better english and all that which by watching gives her hope that someday she'll have what she's always wanted. Okay well at the same time it seems like it would be pulling her down you know because she's seeing what she doesn't have and I know when I and most people look at something and wish we could have it, yeah we have hope but at the same time its like ugh, I don't have that. Hope that made sense.

  4. I think that Shirley gives Lovey hope. Watching her all the time tends to make her mind believe something on TV could turn into reality. One day she will be like Shirley, maybe not exactly but similar. She strives to live in a perfect world, but no world is perfect unless you make it. Lovey is in hope for a HAPPY ENDING. A life with no worries and filled with love. Eventually she will learn that its up to her to make her own happy ending come true.
