Question F:
Why do you think that Sherman Alexie grew up to better himself without the help of anyone?
When you start to read the story of Alexie, from the start you can tell that he is such a creative individual. He did not have money for all the good things in life and his family lived in poverty. It seemed like he was never pushed to learn in school or at home, but at home he had such a varitey of books he could learn just about anything. It seems that he really looked up to his father and grew up to be like him having love for books and sharing them. His father also went to a Catholic school and thats where he learned to read. Alexie soon relized that if he wanted to learn to read and better himself that the school system wasent going to help him. Thinking mabye because he is middle class and indian that their is no need wasting their time teaching him so he took learning into his hands.
I Think that as a boy he had alot of curiousity of why his father loved books so much and so he wanted to learn why. Alexie seems like a very determined and couragous person he learned the concept of reading all on his own. I couldent amagin taking the time to do that by myself. He also has so much love for learning that he does not want children that dont have the recorses, or mabye money or family problems to miss out on the joy of being able to read...even a comic book.
Hi Samantha,
ReplyDeleteI've been a voracious reader my whole life, and I too learned this from my dad. I've never seen my dad away from reaching distance of a paperback novel. His favorites were science fiction and history, and whether he intended to or not, the love of reading was passed on to me. Interestingly enough, I don't think it was passed onto my siblings! As a matter of fact, I havent had a t.v. in over a decade because I'm too busy reading. I liked how you think that Alexie was curious as to WHY his father loved books so much. I've never considered that question, but thinking about it now, I guess it's mostly because reading takes me away from my everyday life, and transforms me into someone, or something else. There are absolutely no restrictions on what I could be in a book, no rules. (kind of like how there are no rules for freewriting)

Hello, I AGREE with you too. Alexie did live poor, but he knew that he wanted to change that. He has a purpose he wanted to achieve. He learned, by reading, and reading lend him in a direction that made him a writer. It amazing to hear his life story and how it opened his eyes to better for his family. He really is amazing person, I NEVER thought education was this important until I read his story. He made me realize why we all need these kinds of things in our lives, its to save us for the years that will pass.. I'm glad to hear that you and me, don't differ about Alexi's story. We both agree why he became what he became and what he had to do along the way to achieve it.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Lesley
Hey,
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you. just because ypur poor doesnt mean you cant make something out of yourself. there are no rules to life, everyone manages it however they like. You can do whatever you put your mind to. Alexie did what he need to do and accomplished it.
